Book Art Therapy
August 2024
Some people may ask “what book are you reading?” I have been asking myself what book do you want to make? Years ago I was an avid book maker and recently was inspired again fold paper into pages. When a friend visited last month we caught up over crafting, bookmaking, and wine.
This new book has no beginning or end nor top or bottom. It is made from a single sheet of paper with collaged elements. When folded up and closed the size is 5.5” x 3.75” x .75”. It can be turned upside down and flipped. It's a journey through whatever you see in the pages, textures, and whichever lines you follow. I see a stormy landscape with sun shining on certain peaks and valleys.
This book, entitled “Black and Blue Monsoon”, is representative of the thoughts and feelings I have been experiencing from the recent loss of significant people in my life. Thankfully, my art practice can help me express feelings in ways words can’t. And perhaps, stepping back from a finished piece I can talk about the art and feelings will surface into words. So many life experiences flow in and out of each other. There is no beginning or end.
Above are examples of other handmade books I’ve make. Lots of binding and book styles are shown: exposed binding (my fav), half bound binding, stab binding, case binding, envelope book, and accordion. I also explored non-traditional book designs, materials, and miniatures. You can see more archived on my website.
