When All Else Fails — Cut it Up

January 2021

There are different practices in the studio for when I get stuck or need to “shake up” a direction or thought process. One practice I use is collaging elements from old paintings. It’s a time to get out of my head (hopefully), make a mess, and create new compositions. The compositions vary in complexity using one or numerous elements. When two elements work well together, I call it a “mashup”. Typically, at least one line meets up, but the two elements will contrast each other by color, form, or intensity. Some collages have more elements creating more layers and depth. Side note: I also use these crops for thank you notes or little gifts for collectors and friends!
