Happy Fall Y’all

September 2024

Gambel oaks, a type scrub or small tree, line the trails in the Sandia Mountains and surrounding areas. Each leaf is different and has its own unique pattern. The leaf’s edge turns sharply inward and then swings outward. I appreciate the movement and asymmetrical shape.

This spinoff series was fun to paint! I kept the palette and form simple, but the colorful layers are strong and pop. There are eight canvases (14" x 11" x .75") in two color palettes- greens/yellows and oranges/reds/yellows. The acrylic layers of paint create a texture that is visible, yet subtle, in the overpainting (solid colored area.) Silhouetting the leaf form is similar to the way I paint mountains. Link to see more views of the paintings. Each are available to collect for $165. This autumnal series was released on September 22, the first day of fall.

This leaf may look familiar. I wrote last month about a series inspired from the hiking workshop.
